What is cassava, actually?
Cassava is a root vegetable. It's grown across South America, Africa and parts of Asia, and it's one of the most-eaten starches in the world after rice and wheat. You've almost certainly eaten it without realising — cassava is the source of tapioca, the pearls in your bubble tea, and the flour behind most gluten-free baking mixes.
It's a hardy, drought-resistant crop that grows in relatively poor soil, which is part of what makes it interesting as a base for pet products. The flour milled from cassava root is fine, neutral in smell and, importantly for our purposes, extremely absorbent.
That absorbency is what makes it useful in a cat litter.
How MagiClump cassava litter is made
Our formula is deliberately simple. Cassava flour, corn starch, guar gum. That's it.
No clay. No bentonite. No silica. No synthetic binders, no artificial fragrances, no additives you can't pronounce. Just three plant-based ingredients doing three jobs:
- Cassava flour provides the absorbent base — it locks moisture in fast and holds it there.
- Corn starch adds structure and helps the granules stay firm rather than crumbling.
- Guar gum is a natural thickener (you've eaten it in ice cream and salad dressings) that acts as the clumping agent, pulling wet granules together into a solid, scoopable ball.
The mixture is processed into fine micro-granules that look and feel closer to sand than to the pellets you'd get from a tofu or wood-based litter. That texture is deliberate. We'll come back to why in a moment.
Because everything in the bag is plant-based, the used litter is biodegradable and breaks down naturally — a meaningful step up from clay-based litters, which sit in landfill essentially forever.
A quick note: we don't market MagiClump as flushable. Even though the ingredients are plant-based, cassava behaves differently in water than tofu does, and Australian plumbing and wastewater systems vary too much for us to make that claim responsibly. Bin your clumps.

Here's where cassava litter earns its place: automatic litter boxes.
If you've ever tried to run a self-cleaning box with a chunky pellet litter, you know the frustration. Pellets can jam the sifting mechanism, sit awkwardly on the rake, get stuck in the waste drawer, or fail to clump quickly enough for the box to detect a "used" ball before the sensor cycles again.

What it feels like — for you and your cat
The sensory experience is one of the biggest differences between cassava and other plant-based litters.
Where tofu feels like small biscuit-y pellets, cassava feels like slightly damp sand. It's cool, fine and soft underfoot. Cats generally adapt to it very quickly — the texture is close to the sand-and-soil substrates their instincts recognise, so there's usually less resistance than switching to a pellet-style litter.
Tracking is low, because the granules don't wedge between paw pads the way larger pellets can. Dust is minimal, though not zero — as with any fine litter, we'd recommend pouring slowly if you're sensitive.
Odour control comes from the cassava's rapid moisture lock rather than added fragrance. MagiClump is unscented by design because auto boxes tend to concentrate scents inside their enclosed waste drawers, and we didn't want to build a product that got worse the harder the box worked.

None of these categories is "wrong." Bentonite has been the default for decades because it works. Tofu is a fantastic all-rounder and our best-seller for a reason. Cassava is the specialist — light, fine, fast-clumping and built for the increasingly popular world of self-cleaning boxes.
How to use MagiClump day-to-day
Setting it up is straightforward.
Start with a 5cm layer across the base of your tray or auto box. Deeper than that in an auto box can jam the sifter; shallower and your cat may hit the base. If your box's manual specifies a fill line, follow that first — the 5cm figure is a general guide.
Scoop clumps daily in a traditional tray. In an auto box, let the box do its thing and just check the waste drawer.
Top up rather than fully refresh — cassava litter loses volume as clumps are removed, so add a fresh cup or two every few days rather than swapping the whole tray. A full refresh every three to four weeks is a reasonable cadence for most single-cat households; more often for multi-cat homes.
Store the bag sealed in a cool, dry spot. Cassava is a food-grade base, and while it's shelf-stable, humidity can affect clumping performance over time. Keep it off the laundry floor.
If your cat is switching from a different litter, do a gradual mix over 10-14 days — start at 25% MagiClump, work up to 50/50, then fully across. Cats generally take to cassava quickly, but the sand texture is a big enough change from pellets that going slow avoids protest peeing.
