Scented vs Unscented Tofu Cat Litter — Which One Suits Your Household?

A practical guide to choosing between Unscented, Green Tea, Baby Powder and Peach Pawfect Tofu Cat Litter.

We recently added three new scents to our Pawfect Tofu Cat Litter range — Green Tea, Baby Powder and Peach — sitting alongside the original Unscented carton. It's the biggest range update we've done since launching, and it's already the most common question landing in our inbox: which one should I actually pick?

The short answer is that all four use the same core formula. The differences come down to whether you want a light fragrance layer working alongside the litter's natural odour control, or a completely fragrance-free tray. Both are valid, and the "best" one really does depend on your cat, your home and your nose.

Here's how to think it through.

Same litter, different fragrance layer

Every carton in the Tofu range uses the same plant-based formula: fast-clumping, low-dust, biodegradable pea-fibre pellets that stay firm when scooped. Absorbency, clump strength, dust levels, tracking and biodegradability are identical across the four variants.

The only thing that changes is the fragrance layer.

There's no perfumed cloud when you open the bag, no lingering scent on your cat's paws. It's a soft top note that lifts briefly as the tray is used, then settles.

Reasons to go scented

A scented tofu litter earns its place in homes where the tray sits close to living space. Think of studio apartments, open-plan kitchens or a laundry that opens onto the family room — anywhere a lingering "cat smell" would be noticed by guests before you'd notice it yourself.

The layered approach helps here. Plant-based litters like tofu are already excellent at absorbing ammonia and locking in moisture, but a light fragrance gives you a second line of defence during the day between scoops. Green Tea in particular has become a customer favourite in kitchens because it reads as fresh rather than floral.

A few cats seem to actively prefer scented trays too — we've heard from a handful of Pawfect customers whose picky older cats settled into the new Peach carton faster than they'd expected. It's not universal, but it's real.

If your household includes people who are sensitive to strong scents but who still want some odour management, the mild fragrance layer in our scented range is usually well-tolerated. It's designed to be noticeable in the tray, not the room.

Reasons to go unscented

Unscented is the right call for a few clear situations.

If your cat has a history of respiratory sensitivities, skin allergies or has ever turned their nose up at a scented product, don't second-guess it — go unscented. Cats' noses are roughly fourteen times more sensitive than ours, and a fragrance that reads as "subtle" to us can be overwhelming to them.

Households where a person is sensitive to fragrance — whether that's asthma, migraines or general fragrance-averseness — should also stick with Unscented. The last thing you want is your litter tray becoming the mystery source of a headache.

And if you're the kind of household that prefers your cleaning routine to smell like cleaning routine and nothing else, Unscented gives you a completely neutral tray. You can layer in your own odour management (a bit of bicarb, ventilation, a covered tray) without competing scents.

Allergy-prone homes generally do better without added fragrance too. Simpler is cleaner.

What each of the three scents actually smells like

We tried to keep the scents on the softer, cleaner end of the spectrum. None of them are sweet or cloying. Here's a rough guide.

Green Tea is fresh and green-earthy — closer to a bag of loose-leaf sencha than a scented candle. It reads as clean and slightly herbal, which is why it works so well in kitchen-adjacent trays.

Baby Powder is soft, classic and comforting. It's the most universally recognisable of the three and the one most people describe as "cosy." A safe pick if you're not sure.

Peach is deliberately subtle — a gentle top note, not a fruity dessert. There's no artificial sweetness to it. Think fresh stone fruit rather than peach lolly.

If you're torn, the honest advice is: Green Tea for households that want fresh, Baby Powder for households that want soft, Peach for households that want bright but understated, and Unscented for households that want nothing at all.

What if your cat hates the switch?

Cats are creatures of habit, and litter is one of the habits they care about most. If you're switching from unscented to scented (or the other way around), don't do it in one hit.

Start by mixing the new litter through the existing tray at about 25% new / 75% old. Give it three or four days. If your cat is using the tray normally, move to a 50/50 mix for another few days, then 75/25, then fully across. The whole transition takes around a fortnight if you go steady.

Keep the tray in the same spot, scoop as usual, and don't change anything else at the same time (new food, new furniture, new baby — pick one variable at a time).

If your cat rejects a scented variant outright — squatting outside the tray, scratching without covering, refusing to enter — that's a clear signal to go back to Unscented. Some cats simply don't want fragrance in their bathroom, and that's fine.
