How to Litter Train a New Cat or Kitten — a Perth-Friendly Guide

The good news about litter training a new cat is that it's mostly automatic. Cats are hardwired to dig, do their business, and bury. You're not really teaching them what to do — you're teaching them where to do it.

If you've just adopted, brought home a rescue, or are expecting a new kitten, here's the simple version. No overcomplicating it.

Day 1: Set the tray up before the cat arrives

Pick a spot before you bring your cat home. The right spot is:

• Quiet. Not next to the washing machine, not in a high-traffic hallway, not in the kitchen where you cook. Cats want privacy.
• Easy to access. No closed doors between the cat and the tray. They will hold it, then have an accident in front of the door you closed.
• Not next to their food and water. Cats won't toilet where they eat. If the tray is in the same corner as the food bowl, expect accidents elsewhere.

For most Perth houses, the best spots are: a corner of the laundry, a secondary bathroom, or a quiet corner of a study. Avoid the garage if it gets hot — cats don't want to bake while they go.

Day 1: Show them the tray once. That's it.

When your cat first arrives:

1. Place them gently into the tray.
2. Let them sniff around. Don't hold them in there.
3. Let them step out whenever they want.

That's the entire "training" step. They don't need to use it right away — they need to KNOW where it is.

The litter choice that makes training easier

The litter you use matters more than people realise. For training a new cat:

• Avoid heavily scented litters. Cats don't like overpowering smells — lavender and citrus especially can put them off the tray entirely.
• Choose something with the right texture. Cats prefer something they can dig comfortably. Fine-grain bentonite or pellet-style tofu both work well; large coarse pebbles can put kittens off because they hurt small paws.
• Don't change litter brands mid-training. Pick one, stick with it for the first 4–6 weeks, then evaluate.

The three mistakes that set most new owners back

After a decade of selling litter to first-time cat owners, the same three mistakes come up over and over:

Mistake 1: One tray for multiple cats. The rule is N + 1. Two cats = three trays. Three cats = four trays. One per cat plus one spare. Skip this and you'll have accidents within a week.

Mistake 2: Cleaning too aggressively. First-time owners scrub the tray with strong disinfectants every day. Cats hate the smell of cleaning chemicals (especially anything citrus or eucalyptus-based) and will avoid the tray. Scoop daily, rinse with hot water only weekly, deep clean monthly. That's it.

Mistake 3: Punishing accidents. If your cat goes outside the tray, do NOT rub their nose in it, yell, or punish them. Cats don't learn from punishment — they just learn to be afraid of you. Clean it up with an enzymatic cleaner (not bleach — bleach can attract them back to the same spot) and move on.

When your cat doesn't use the tray

If a few days have passed and your cat still isn't using the tray, work through this checklist:

• Is the tray in the wrong spot? (Too noisy, too exposed, too close to food.)
• Is it too small? They should be able to turn around fully inside.
• Is the litter too deep? 3–5cm is the sweet spot — too much and they sink, too little and they can't dig.
• Are they sick? UTIs and stress-related cystitis cause accidents. If accidents persist beyond 5–7 days, vet visit.
• Did you move? Cats often regress when their environment changes. Give them 2 weeks of patience.

For kittens specifically: tiny kittens (under 8 weeks) may need lower-sided trays they can climb into easily. A shallow tray for the first month, then graduate to your full-size tray.

A small tip that works for nervous rescues

If you've adopted an older cat from a rescue, ask the shelter what litter brand they used. Cats remember the texture and smell. Using the same brand for the first 2 weeks at home — even if it's not what you plan to stay on — buys you faster confidence with the tray. Switch gradually after.
